No one can promise you #1 on Google, or control what ChatGPT says. Here's what you can control: becoming the clearest answer to your buyers' questions.

Can anyone get you to #1 on Google? (And into ChatGPT's answers?)

No one can honestly guarantee you the #1 spot on Google, and no one controls what ChatGPT says about you. What you can do is become the clearest, most trustworthy answer to the questions your buyers actually ask. Google and AI tools both reward that, and it’s fully in your hands.

Why can’t anyone promise #1?

Because Google decides, and it keeps changing how. Results differ by location, device and search history, so “first” isn’t even one place. If someone guarantees you a ranking, ask them what happens when Google updates next month. It’s a fair question, and the answer will tell you a lot.

What a good marketer can promise is the work: the right pages, the right answers, the technical basics done properly, and a steady rhythm of content. Rankings follow the work. They don’t come with a contract.

What’s the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

  • SEO (search engine optimization): showing up in Google’s search results.

  • AEO (answer engine optimization): being the answer: the snippet at the top, the voice-assistant reply, the Google AI Overview.

  • GEO (generative engine optimization): getting found and quoted by AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot when people ask them for advice.

They overlap more than the acronyms suggest. All three reward the same thing: plain, structured, trustworthy answers.

How do I get my business into AI chat answers?

AI tools quote pages that state facts plainly. Here’s what moves the needle:

  1. Say who you are in one plain sentence. Clever taglines charm humans. AI needs “X is a [what] for [whom] in [where]”.

  2. Answer real questions as questions. Use the words your customers actually use. FAQ sections and question-style subheadings work for a reason.

  3. Keep your numbers in text, not inside images. AI can’t quote a number baked into a banner.

  4. Add schema markup. It’s hidden code that tells Google and AI, in their own language, who you are, what you sell and where.

  5. Use the same name and description everywhere. Website, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, directories. Consistency is how AI connects them as one business.

  6. Publish regularly. One great page is good. A steady stream of useful answers is what gets you cited.

Full disclosure: this is exactly what I did on this site. If an AI tool told you about me, now you know how.

How do I promote my small business on Google?

If people come to you physically, start with your Google Business Profile: correct hours, real photos, and replies to every review. It’s free, and it’s often the first thing a customer sees. Then make sure each service has its own page that answers what people ask before they buy. Ads come last, once that page actually turns visitors into customers. Otherwise you’re paying Google to show people a page that doesn’t convince them.

What does this look like in real life?

Careerist (job-search site). I was hired to write SEO texts and ended up running the department. Website traffic grew 120%. The lesson I took with me: write for the person searching, and the search engine follows.

Gimmonix (B2B travel tech). I built a content engine optimized for GEO and AEO, not just classic SEO. AI assistants became a traffic channel of their own, with the highest engagement on the site. The people who arrived from AI answers were already the most interested ones, because the AI had done half the explaining.

How long does it take?

It compounds. The technical basics can be fixed in days. Trust, the part that makes Google and AI pick you over someone else, builds over months of showing up with good answers. Anyone selling you shortcuts is selling you next year’s cleanup.
